Which AVL Lot Still Costs $12 a Day, and Is the Walk Worth Paying For?

Since Thursday, September 10, parking at Asheville Regional Airport has run on three tiers. Premium costs $22 a day, Standard costs $15, and Shuttle costs $12. AVL calls the change simplified, and the menu really is shorter. The prices underneath it moved in different directions, though. The upper Daily Lot, the one closest to the terminal, used to cost $12 a day. It is now part of Premium at $22. Shuttle Lots A, B and C are the only lots whose rate didn't change.

So the $12 day still exists at AVL, but only if you take a shuttle to reach it. For anyone in Arden, where the airport sits just down Airport Road, that changes how to plan a trip this fall and through the holidays.

The Old Lots, the New Names, the New Math

AVL published a side-by-side of every old lot and where it landed. The trip costs in the last two columns are simple multiplication, assuming the daily rate applies to each day.

Previous lot Old rate New product New rate 4-day trip, old 4-day trip, new
Hourly Lot $30/day Premium $22/day $120 $88
Daily Lot, upper $12/day Premium $22/day $48 $88
Garage $17/day Premium $22/day $68 $88
Daily Lot, lower $12/day Standard $15/day $48 $60
Shuttle Lots A, B & C $12/day Shuttle $12/day $48 $48

Three things stand out in that table.

First, the upper Daily Lot went up the most. It rose $10 a day, an 83 percent increase, so a long weekend that cost $48 last summer now costs $88. Second, the old Hourly Lot actually got cheaper per day. Its $30 daily rate became Premium's $22, so anyone who used to leave a car there for a full day comes out ahead. Third, the Garage went from $17 to $22, an extra $5 a day for the covered spaces that now sit inside Premium. AVL describes Premium as a mix of surface spaces and covered garage spaces.

Old lot names won't help much now. You're really choosing how you want to get to the ticket lobby.

What the Extra Dollars Buy

Each tier pairs a price with a way of reaching the terminal. Premium is the closest. Standard is described as close enough to walk, with an AVL shuttle as backup. Shuttle parking covers three lots farther out, all served by AVL shuttles.

That puts a price on the walk. Over the Shuttle rate, Standard costs $3 more a day and Premium costs $10 more. On a week-long Thanksgiving trip, those gaps add up to $21 and $70. One reason to pay them is that AVL is still a construction site. Terminal modernization under AVL Forward is ongoing. A partial new baggage claim opened April 17, 2026, the rental car counters moved into their new facility on May 20, and the rest of baggage claim is expected in summer 2027. AVL expects the full project to finish between late 2027 and early 2028. AVL tied the parking overhaul directly to keeping roads around the terminal running while that work continues.

The shuttle trip is easier to plan than it used to be. AVL's parking shuttles are free and pick up at two spots on the curb, one outside the ticket lobby and one outside baggage claim. They run to the Standard lot, the Shuttle lots and the new ride-app pickup area. You can follow them in real time on the Passio GO! app or the airport's website. Being able to watch the shuttle arrive takes away most of the reason to pay for the walk.

Getting Picked Up Is Its Own Plan Now

Not everyone in Arden drives to AVL. A neighbor's drop-off, an Uber or a quick ride from family is often faster than parking at all, and the parking overhaul followed another change that affects exactly those trips.

Since Tuesday, September 1, taxis and ride apps such as Uber and Lyft pick up passengers in a dedicated lot just south of the new rental car center and baggage claim. AVL puts the walk from the terminal at about six minutes in its September 1 announcement and four to six minutes in its later fall travel tips. Any AVL shuttle at the curb will also take you there. Drop-offs haven't moved. Ride-app and taxi drivers can still let passengers out at the curb in front of the ticket lobby or at the rental car center.

AVL CEO Lew Bleiweis was candid about why things keep moving. "I know the passenger experience has been difficult at times, so it is good to reach this new phase of the project," he said in the airport's announcement. The pickup spot has shifted several times during AVL Forward, and this move is the latest planned step in that sequence.

If you're the one picking someone up, you'll wait somewhere familiar. AVL's free Cell Phone Lot is across from the main airport entrance, next to Sheetz, and drivers have to stay with their cars while they wait. That Sheetz on Airport Road, across from the Walmart, opened on March 19, 2026. AVL's fall guidance asks drivers to use the lot rather than wait at the curb, which keeps traffic moving in front of the terminal.

Why the Calendar Matters More Than the Rate Card

The lots matter more because the airport is busy. AVL counted 2,240,877 passengers in 2025, its second-busiest year on record. Its September 18, 2026 board packet shows 1,256,659 passengers for 2026 through July, up 1.9 percent over the same stretch of 2025, even though July alone came in at 242,676, down 1.3 percent from July 2025. So the year as a whole is still running a little ahead of last year.

AVL's fall travel note, published September 24, asks flyers to arrive at least two hours before boarding to leave time to park, check in and clear security. Its FAQ says to add more time during holiday peaks, including time to find a parking space. AVL's parking page says you pay on the way out, and parking is credit card only.

That makes the extra minutes the shuttle needs easy to plan for. The two-hour window AVL already recommends leaves room for a shuttle ride from the far lots. AVL also warned that entrances and traffic patterns would change with the new tiers and suggested looking over the updated maps before your first trip under the new system.

A Departure Morning From Arden, Sequenced

Here is a holiday-week departure using only the facts above:

  1. Before leaving home, pull up AVL's updated parking map and pick a tier based on trip length. On a four-day trip, Premium costs $40 more than Shuttle.
  2. For coffee on the way, Ultra Coffeebar's Arden location at 1870 Brevard Road, Suite 113, had opened by late July.
  3. If you're coming from the Brevard Road side, all four westbound I-26 lanes from U.S. 64 at Exit 49 to Brevard Road at Exit 33 have been in their final layout since mid-July. Work continues west of the Blue Ridge Parkway bridge, and short lane closures are still possible.
  4. Get to the airport at least two hours before boarding, park, and check Passio GO! for the next shuttle if you're in Standard or Shuttle.
  5. Coming home, either walk or ride to the ride-app lot south of baggage claim, or text whoever is waiting in the Cell Phone Lot by Sheetz.

The roads are still changing as well. Eastbound I-26 work and the new Exit 35 connection to Frederick Law Olmsted Way are still under construction, and NCDOT expects the interchange done by the end of 2026. AVL's remaining baggage claim follows in summer 2027. Until then, the $12 Shuttle tier is the only AVL parking rate that hasn't changed since before September 10.
